      What is seminary life like?

I have to admit that I was very surprised by seminary life. I had the opportunity to visit the seminary a couple times before I became a seminarian and I guess I had some pretty big misconceptions. For some reason I pictured it like a monastery where everyone walked around praying all the time when they weren't in class. We do have plenty of time for prayer but seminary life is a lot like college. We go to class, study, hang out with friends - pretty normal stuff.

      What does a priest do?

While it can vary, the majority of parish priests spend their time preparing for and celebrating the sacraments, praying for the church and their people (and in personal prayer), crafting homilies, preparing couples for marriage, spiritually directing and counseling parishioners, blessing people and things, teaching classes, visiting the sick and imprisoned, along with any administrative responsibilities. It is a thrilling, fulfilling, and blessed life! Every day is different. I LOVE IT.

Fr. Shane Wieck, Parochial Vicar, St. Laurence, Amarillo

    • Frequently Asked Questions

What did you fear prior to seminary?

I feared that I would be lonely in seminary and as a priest. Yes, I have experienced some loneliness, but have also seen that it is an aspect of everyone's life this side of heaven, no matter one's vocation. In fact I have discovered that loneliness, in the truth of what it is at the depths, is really just a form of our longing for God. Other relationships can soften this feeling, but they can never fill it. Only heart-to-heart relationship with Him - a sharing of life - will do.
